Why “I Am My Niche” Changed My Business: Reflections of a 9–5 Professional Building Online Income
For the past three weeks, I’ve been doing some heavy reflection. I asked myself some tough questions:
- What have I really accomplished so far?
- Is all this business stuff even worth pursuing?
- How can I succeed in a market already oversaturated with noise, competition, and conflicting voices?
As a professional working in the defense industry—specifically on the new Canadian Navy ship programs—my time is limited. The reality is, I only have about one hour per day to work on my online business.
Despite having a good salary, my financial situation is still crying for help. Extra expenses keep piling up, and like many families, I’m stretched thin. So the real question I faced was:
👉 How can I become efficient and build a profitable business in these conditions?
Consistency Isn’t the Problem
If consistency alone guaranteed success, I’d already be there. I’ve shown up. I’ve put in the hours.
But the results? They haven’t matched the effort.
That made me wonder—was it my language?
Not just English vs. French, but the way I was presenting myself. Was it harder for people to trust me? Was it harder for them to see themselves in my story?
These doubts kept circling back to one crucial point.
The Breakthrough: Niching Down
Then it hit me.
Something so obvious, yet I had been overlooking it the whole time:
✨ I need to niche down.
Trying to help “everyone who wants to make money online” is simply too vague. That audience is flooded with marketers shouting over one another, each pushing a different angle. No wonder I struggled to stand out.
So I asked myself:
- Who can I really relate to?
- Who truly understands my struggles?
- Who am I actually documenting this journey for?
And then I realized the answer:
👉 I AM my niche.

I don’t need to pretend to be someone else. I don’t need to chase every type of opportunity seeker. The truth is powerful:
I’m building a business as a 9–5 professional with a family lifestyle, struggling to make ends meet, with only one hour a day to figure out another income source.
That’s my reality.
That’s my truth.
And that’s exactly who I can help.
Authenticity Over Perfection
Sometimes we get so caught up in trying to be “different” or “perfect” that we forget the most powerful thing we can share is ourselves.
People don’t want the polished dream. They want the real story—the struggles, the small wins, the lessons learned along the way.
And when I thought about it, that’s what drew me to the mentors I respect most. They weren’t hiding behind a mask of perfection. They were sharing their journeys, step by step.
That’s what makes this genuine. That’s what creates trust.
My Mentor’s Advice
When I shared this breakthrough with my mentor, he said something that really stuck with me:
“The line ‘I am my niche’ is so powerful in the making money online space when you’re in these early stages… I’m delighted to hear you had that breakthrough. It’s the same one I had back in 2008 after I’d spent years just trying to ‘sell stuff’ desperately hoping somehow I’d make money…
You have to consider… WHY would someone listen to you / follow you? I’d say it’s because the stuff you’re sharing can help or benefit them in some way.
The challenge most have is they think they need to be showing people how to make money. And sure, when you’re making money you can do that. BUT… all you ever really need to do is show people how you’ve done what you’ve done.
So it kind of looks like this:
– Follow a plan
– Share what you’re doing in your content
– Share the lessons, the progress, setbacks, breakthroughs, mistakes, as you follow your plan
– Share who you are, what you aim to do, what’s important to you—this lets people get to know you and relate to you.
In that sense, it’s not like you have to shout ‘I help 9–5 professionals with a family lifestyle, struggling to make ends meet, and having a limited time every day to find another income source.’ You can… but what you can also do is be clear about who YOU are and what you’re aiming to do, and you will naturally attract others like you.”
That advice gave me clarity. I don’t need to “become” a guru. I just need to share my journey honestly, and the right people will resonate.
Why This Changes Everything
By defining my niche so clearly, my mission becomes simpler and more magnetic:

💡 If I can reach $1,000/month online while balancing a full-time job and family responsibilities, then others in the same situation can follow the path I’ve walked.
This isn’t about selling a dream.
This is about documenting the reality—my struggles, my small wins, my lessons—and sharing them openly.
And that, to me, feels both genuine and powerful.
Moving Forward
I’ll share what works, what doesn’t, and how I progress step by step. Together, we’ll see what’s possible when you stay consistent, even with just one hour per day.
My flame is lit again. I know exactly who I’m speaking to and why.
If you’re reading this and you’re also working a 9–5, raising a family, and wondering how on earth you’ll find the time and money to start an online income—then you’re in the right place.
Because if it works for me, it can work for you.
Final Thought
Sometimes the solution to your struggles isn’t outside—it’s staring back at you in the mirror.
For me, the realization was simple but game-changing: I am my niche.
Now the mission is clear. And the journey continues.

P.S. I’d love to hear your story. Are you also balancing work, family, and trying to build something online? Drop a comment or send me a message—I read every one.

Hi Martin – This is truly a breakthrough for you! I had not thought about this concept about niching down my own niche to pinpoint my audience even more. Genius! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your journey and for being so transparent so that people like me might follow your path. Have a wonderful and productive week, my friend!
Hi Martin,
I devoured this post! Like I had mentioned in the community, I was at that same crosswalk a few weeks ago and when it hits you – just like you mentioned – it really can be both lifting and hard to take.
In my case, it was both “why didn’t I see this earlier” and “wow, I can really do this!” at the same time.
I know you got this and will definitely be able to help everyone like us who just wants to get out of the financial rat race we all seem to be in.
Congrats and looking forward to continue reading about your journey! Cheers!
This really resonated with me. The moment you said, “I am my niche,” it clicked. So many people try to chase trends or fit into a market, but the most magnetic thing we have is our own story. Sharing the reality of balancing a 9–5, family, and building something in the margins of the day is what makes your journey relatable and inspiring. Thank you for being so open about the doubts, the struggles, and the breakthroughs—it makes the path feel more possible for the rest of us walking it too. Excited to keep following your journey!
Hi Alison, once you realize and understand it, “I am my niche” is powerful! Your journey becomes your content. People like you will identify to you, follow you and like you. We are never alone on a pathway. As creepy as it sounds, someone in the same situation follows you, looks at what you do, where you win and where you fall. He learns what works and what don’t. And when you stand up on your feet after a fall, you motivate, and create trust. So yes you’re right, this journey is very exciting!
