What My Dog Taught Me About Business (and Life)

This post is a little different.
Before I dive into affiliate marketing tips or strategies, I want to share something personal—because sometimes the greatest lessons for success don’t come from a course or a mentor. They come from unexpected places.
Recently, I lost my dog, Pollux.
He wasn’t just a pet; he was my best friend, my quiet companion during long work sessions, and what I liked to call “my marketing assistant.”

He’d sit beside me while I typed blog posts, filmed content, or worked on my affiliate business—always there, loyal and inspiring.
He was part of our family, growing with my children.
He felt asleep peacefully, surrounded by the ones he loved, after 10 years of a long and happy dog life.
Taking a break from my blog was necessary. I needed time to breathe, to grieve, and to find my energy again.
But during that pause, I realized something powerful: many of the qualities that made my dog so special are the same qualities that lead to success in affiliate marketing—and in life.
Lesson 1: Consistency Pays Off
My dog never understood the concept of a “day off.”
Every morning, without fail, he was there—tail wagging, eyes bright—ready to greet me with the same joy as if it were the first time.
After work, he was always the first to welcome me home, overflowing with unconditional happiness. Each time I opened the door, it felt as though I’d been gone for years.
In his own steady, faithful way, Pollux had built a bond that needed no words—a simple, constant way of saying, “I love you.”
Now, when I open that door, there’s only silence… and the memories we shared.
In affiliate marketing, that same consistency is everything.
Success doesn’t come from one grand gesture—it’s built through small, daily actions: posting on social media, writing that email, publishing that blog. These are the moments that build trust with your audience and establish your credibility online.
Just like Pollux’s unwavering welcome, showing up every day—even when you don’t feel like it—creates a lasting connection.
In the long run, consistency in affiliate marketing isn’t just a strategy; it’s the heartbeat of your business.

Lesson 2: Patience Wins
Whether he was waiting for me to come home from work or quietly sitting by his bowl at dinner time, my dog seemed to understand the art of waiting better than anyone.
When we had to leave him for a few hours, he would climb onto the couch, settle in, and patiently watch the door—or maybe drift into a nap—until the sound of our car in the driveway told him his people were back.
He could spend ages chewing his favorite toy or gazing out the window, as if lost in thought. Then, in an instant, a flash of movement—a squirrel—would send him into full alert. But if it was the neighbor’s dog strolling by instead, patience gave way to a burst of righteous barking.
Affiliate marketing is a lot like that.
You plant seeds—content, offers, lead magnets—and you wait. Some days, nothing seems to happen. Other days, results appear in ways you didn’t expect. And sometimes, frustration tries to take over.
But the truth is, the biggest mistake beginners make is giving up too soon. Patience isn’t just a virtue here—it’s the bridge between the seeds you plant and the harvest you’ve been working toward.
Lesson 3: Find Joy in the Journey

For my dog, every little moment was worth celebrating—a walk at the mountain, the hunt for rabbits, dipping the nose in the first snow of December, or just being near the people he loved.
You should have seen the joy on his face—bouncing around the moment he heard the word “dehors!” (outside) or caught sight of his leash.
The same applies to business.
It’s easy to focus only on big goals: your first $1,000, your first 100 subscribers, or your first major sale. But if you can find joy in the smaller wins—a single new email subscriber, your first blog comment, or finishing a post you’re proud of—you’ll stay motivated long enough to hit the big milestones.
Lesson 4: Loyalty Matters
Dogs have a way of showing loyalty that feels unshakable.
They don’t weigh the pros and cons—they simply choose you, every single day… well, at least until the moment your stepmother walks in holding a handful of bacon slices. Then, all bets are off.
Affiliate marketing asks for that same kind of devotion.
It’s about staying true to one clear path, even when distractions—those tempting “bacon slice” opportunities—come waving in your direction.
I’ll admit, I didn’t always get this right. I chased more than my share of distractions before I realized the value of commitment.
That’s when I found Dean Holland’s mentorship. His program gave me something priceless: a structured, proven path to follow. All it asks in return is that you stick with it—loyally.
Why I’m Sharing This
Coming back to my blog after losing my best friend isn’t just about writing again—it’s about remembering what matters.
Success in affiliate marketing isn’t just built on strategy. It’s built on:
✅ Consistency
✅ Patience
✅ Joy in the journey
✅ And loyalty to one proven path
These lessons may have come from my dog, but they’re the same ones that can help you build a profitable business in 2025.
If you’ve been feeling stuck or overwhelmed, take it from me—and my late “assistant”:
Show up. Be patient. Celebrate the small wins. Stay loyal to your path. And never stop moving forward.

Wherever you are, I wish you can still do what you like the most: chasing squirrels and rabbits.
Hope we’ll meet again one day.
Love you! 🐶

Martin, I love how you speak of your love of dog. I have an old dog and a youngster. My 13 year old has been off and on, on her way out for a few years. We used to walk 8 miles a day until she slowed down. Tonight she insisted on walking around the block. I had to cut it short because the heat and her limitations. Now she’s happy lying in front of the fan. I think she’ll live another day.
My condolences for your loss 🙏🏾💙
They are our best friends, providing unconditional love. The simplest little things make them happy and their happiness is always contagious. Thank you Kate and enjoy these beautiful moments.
Hi Martin – Before I make any other comments, let me say I am truly sorry for your loss. I can feel it in your words how profoundly this family member affected the lives of you and your family in the most positive way. I am fortunate, like you, as I have a companion just like you had. She is getting older, and I know the day will come when I need to say goodbye, and I am dreading that day with every ounce of my being. What your companion taught you, and is teaching us now, is how to be unconditional. Living life without conditions and enjoying life to its fullest. Thank you for sharing the lessons may your beloved family member taught you!
Hi Martin,
Sorry for your loss my friend; the message you bring is both heartwarming and so true. Unconditional love is what they provide – as well as loyalty. You can’t get better than that.
Que les bons souvenirs de Pollux puisse apporter à toi et ta famille un baume durant cette période difficile.
I’m sure he’s in a great place, chasing squirrels and waiting for bacon. Cheers!
