Outsmart TikTok Ban: Expand Your Avatar Into A New Content Strategy Using AI

“AI won’t replace humans, but humans with AI will replace humans without AI”

-Harvard Business Review

This week was one of questioning.

I was questioning myself about what will be my Tiktok strategy following the ban which is now officially maintained for Sunday -in a few hours- unless some miracle happens, see this article from Yahoo Finance: “TikTok loses Supreme Court battle to stop US ban“.

For those who were under a rock for the past months of 2024, the “U.S. TikTok ban” refers to the potential restrictions or outright ban of the TikTok app in the United States. It’s been a hot topic due to concerns raised by the U.S. government over privacy and national security.

They believe that TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, might share user data with the Chinese government, although TikTok has denied this. These events arise against a backdrop of tension with China, serving as part of broader disputes between the US and China concerning technology and trade.

Then, what’s next you ask?

This is what I tried to figure out this week.

If TikTok were banned or heavily restricted in the U.S., it would have a ripple effect on the entire community. Here’s how it could affect us, content creators:

  1. Loss of Platform: Creators who rely on TikTok to share their content, grow their audience like I’m doing, or earn income through sponsorships, brand deals, and TikTok’s Creator Fund would lose access to their main platform.
  2. Shift to Other Platforms: Creators would need to move their content to other platforms like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, or Snapchat Spotlight. However, building a new audience and adapting to a different algorithm can be time-consuming and challenging.
  3. Economic Impact: Many creators and businesses use TikTok for advertising or selling products. A ban would disrupt their revenue streams and marketing efforts.
  4. Audience Fragmentation: TikTok has a unique community and vibe. If it’s banned, the community might scatter across other apps, making it harder for creators to engage with their current followers in the same way.
  5. Creativity Roadblock: TikTok’s format and tools (like trending sounds, filters, and duets) encourage creativity. Without TikTok, creators might struggle to find another platform that offers the same level of engagement and innovation.

Even if I live in Canada, the U.S. ban is going to impact me. First, I will lose many of my followers, and second, even if it’s not the week or the next month, I’m afraid Canada is going to follow closely it’s neighbor.

As of January 17, 2025, Canada has taken significant steps concerning TikTok due to national security concerns.

As per Wikipedia, in February 2023 the Canadian government banned TikTok on all government-issued devices, citing “an unacceptable level of risk to privacy and security” from the Chinese-owned app. This action was followed by all provincial and territorial governments implementing similar bans on their devices.

In November 2024, after a national security review, the Canadian government ordered TikTok to dissolve its operations within the country. TikTok has stated its intention to challenge this decision in court.

Given these developments, it is evident that Canada is aligning its actions with those of the United States regarding TikTok. While a complete ban on TikTok for all users in Canada has not been officially implemented as of this date, the dissolution order indicates a move towards more stringent restrictions.

Therefore, it is plausible that Canada may eventually enforce a full ban on TikTok, similar to the measures taken by its neighbor, the U.S.

So I have no choice.

The ban is not guaranteed—it depends on legal and political decisions.

In the meantime, I know that many creators are diversifying their content across platforms to reduce their reliance on TikTok. This way, even if TikTok disappears, their audience and content strategy won’t.

As a content creator too, it’s a good idea to think about expanding my reach to other platforms, just in case!

But where should I go? Am I ready to change my platform strategy from TikTok to another one like Facebook, or YouTube? It’s been a year now that I’m focusing almost solely on TikTok to grow organically my audience and I’m just starting to understand its intricacies. Changing now will mean starting over again, with a new learning slope.

Can I afford this?

Answer is YES!

Now I’m in an excellent position to start on another platform. Not only that I have the TikTok and short form video experience, but I have my marketing persona with me and AI, a powerful tool, that provides me the help I need to design and fast forward my new strategy for the platform of my choice.

All I have to do is to ask ChatGPT to expand my Avatar into a content strategy for another platform.

Because I’m not yet ready to take a decision about the other platform I will use, also because I’m still going to grow my audience on TikTok until further notice, and since in my last post I promised to give you a content strategy for TikTok, so here it is.

-Hey ChatGPT! Could you please expand my marketing Avatar into a TikTok content strategy that will best engage my audience. Give some examples of content I can use.

Martin, The potential TikTok ban poses a huge challenge for creators, especially for those who have invested significant time and effort in understanding its unique platform dynamics. As someone who has been focusing on TikTok to grow my audience, the thought of starting over on another platform feels daunting, but your point about leveraging existing experience and tools like AI to ease the transition is encouraging. Diversifying across platforms makes sense, and your detailed strategy provides clear direction for creators to adapt without losing momentum. The ripple effects of such a ban highlight the need for readiness, and your suggestion to keep growing on TikTok while preparing for alternatives feels like a balanced approach. Thanks for sharing these practical insights—it’s a great reminder to stay flexible and prepared for the unexpected. I do feel lucky that I am in the UK and the ban doesn’t impact us (YET!). Atif

Hi Atif, I didn’t talk about it here but you remind it to me: we see the importance to have our own assets (Blog, Mailing list) because whatever happen with those outside platforms, our assets belong to us and will never be affected.
      Let’s keep in touch

    Hi, Martin!
I like the prompt you used to get a strategy using AI. It’s surprising how quickly so many video ideas can be made for us. I especially like the idea of “Why I refused to quit.” It’s so easy to give up on this journey. That would make a great video. I’ll see what ChatGPT has to say about ideas for my niche. Thanks for the tip and the example prompt!

    Nice article Martin.

Tik Tok is banned from government phones here in Australia. We just had that bill go through parliament to ban social media (all of it) for under 16. My guess is that Australia will eventually ban TT here too. At the same time talk of TT shop coming to Aus is still strong. It’s a confusing landscape. I’ve got multiple strategies in play, and I’ll just keep creating content. The ability to adapt is key in digital marketing, so the changing platform landscape is just another adaptation!
