The #1 Mistake Beginners Make in Affiliate Marketing (And How to Avoid It)

This week, I made my first grass cut of the season.

Because of all the rain we had in May, I waited a bit too long to finally tackle the lawn.
When I did get out there, the grass was so high that the lawn mower’s engine kept stalling—it was a real struggle to get the job done!

I even made a video about it—you can check it out here.

At one point, I thought maybe changing how I cut the grass would help.
I tried squares, rows, even diagonals—thinking maybe one pattern would be easier than the others.

Nope.

All that switching around did was give me a temporary mental break.
I was tired, so I kept changing direction—just to convince myself I was “making progress.”

But in reality, it was just a distraction.

If I had stuck to my original plan and kept pushing forward, I would have finished the job half an hour sooner—and my front yard would have looked so much better from the street.

🔗 How This Relates to Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing sounds simple… until you try to start.

You’re chasing freedom. You’re ready to take control of your income and build something of your own.

But then the overwhelm kicks in:
You’re bombarded with YouTube videos, blog posts, social media “experts,” and a million strategies pulling you in every direction.

Before you know it, you’re stuck in a loop of consuming instead of doing—and feeling more confused than ever.

🚫 The Biggest Mistake Beginners Make?

👉 Trying to figure it all out alone.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking:
“If I just find the right video, the right blog post, or the right free course… maybe then I’ll finally know what to do.”

So you jump from tactic to tactic. You collect freebies. You subscribe to countless newsletters. You try to stitch together a business from bits and pieces of advice.

But all that “learning” often leads to zero real progress—just like those endless direction changes in my yard didn’t get the grass cut any faster.

You end up more overwhelmed than when you started.

⚠️Why This Keeps Happening

Here’s something no one really talks about:

Most of us don’t decide to start an online business from a place of peace and stability.
We start because we’re under pressure—just like when I waited too long to cut the grass, and then the rains hit. Suddenly, it was too long, too late.

Maybe you’re buried in debt.
Maybe you’ve lost a job.
Maybe you just realized… “I need to do something. Fast.”

That’s when panic sets in.

And panic—especially after months or years of denial—can push you into the arms of anyone who promises a quick fix.
You land on a guru’s page, read about “easy money while you sleep,” and boom—you’re sold.

But here’s the truth:

Most beginners don’t fail because they’re lazy or unmotivated.
They fail because they’re trying to build a puzzle with pieces from 10 different boxes—and no picture on the front to guide them.

It’s like cutting the lawn in random patterns, hoping one of them will be the magic shortcut.
When the first obstacle shows up—like a thick patch of grass or a stubborn root—they get frustrated and quit.
Then they chase the next shiny object.

The cycle repeats.
Time is lost.
Money is wasted.
Confidence drops.

Meanwhile, the real solution—legit mentors, real programs, and actual guidance—gets ignored, simply because it doesn’t promise “overnight success.”

There’s too much noise out there. Too much fog.
And when you’re already stressed or scared, that noise becomes paralyzing.

We’ve been conditioned to figure things out on our own.
But when it comes to building an online business, independence without direction is a trap.

🎯 What to Do Instead: Follow ONE Proven Path

If I could only give one piece of advice to beginners, it would be this:

👉 Choose ONE mentor. ONE method. ONE path. And commit to it.

You don’t need to master funnels, email marketing, SEO, social media, and paid ads all at once.
You need clarity, consistency, and a step-by-step plan that actually works.

Just like sticking to that first mowing pattern—pushing forward until the job is done—works better than endless changes.

Of course, even on a straight path, you might have to make small adjustments for the unique shape of your yard—navigating around a tree, a garden bed, or a patch of tough soil.

The same is true for affiliate marketing:
➡️ Stay focused on your chosen path, but don’t be afraid to make minor corrections when market factors or new insights demand it.
These tweaks aren’t about abandoning your strategy—they’re about adapting smartly to obstacles while staying the course.

That’s what changed everything for me.

🌟 What Happened When I Made the Shift

Before I found a proven system, I was constantly second-guessing myself.
I’d spend hours “working on my business” without actually doing anything that moved the needle.

But once I found a beginner-friendly path that showed me what to do, when to do it, and why—it all started to click.

I didn’t need to be tech-savvy. I didn’t need to spend all day online.
I just needed the right roadmap and the flexibility to adjust slightly when needed.

You’re not alone in feeling lost or frustrated when you’re starting out.

I didn’t wanted to cut the grass this day pretexting I had better to do.

But I have no choice.

When my business will do enough money, I will have a motorized lawnmower or best, I will pay someone to take care of the yard.

You don’t have to figure this out by yourself.

Choose one path. Follow it. Stick with it.

And trust me—when you finally have a clear plan to follow, everything changes.

  1. This is such a brilliant (and totally relatable 😂) analogy! I was nodding the whole way through—especially the part about switching strategies just to feel like you’re making progress. Been there, mowed that. It’s so easy to get caught up in the overwhelm and forget that sticking to one solid plan is usually the fastest way forward. Thanks for the honest reminder and the laugh—I’ll definitely be thinking of lawnmowers the next time I’m tempted to chase a shiny new “quick win” strategy.

  2. So relatable Martin! (not the cutting the grass part…)
Trying to do so many things all at the same time – even when it’s going well – is definitely one of the traits every online marketer has tried.
That and changing what they’re doing before getting any results because we read something online about is another recipe for disaster!
Great look on the website as well – love the layout!

  3. Martin, this was geeat! I love how you turned a frustrating lawn mowing experience into a lesson for affiliate marketing. It’s eye opening to see how chasing different strategies can waste time, just like switching mowing patterns. Your advice to stick with one mentor and a clear plan is exactly what beginners need to hear. Thanks for the fresh perspective and congrats on the slick new website design! It all looks great!

  4. Hi Martin – This was such a relatable post! I’m one of the few ones that I know that enjoys cutting my grass because it gives me solitude time to think, listen to music or just be by myself. I am one that has tried to cut grass many different ways to try to eliminate redundancy. It is when I stray from the task and try to get “fancy” that it takes twice as long. That’s like affiliate marketing, at least for me. I have to stay on a proven path and not stray so that I don’t get distracted with all the bells and whistles that other people have to offer. Thank you for this great reminder and I look forward to continuing to follow you in your journey!
